Starting out There are two main areas within the real estate industry - commercial and residential. Both have similar pay rates at a starting level. As with most sales positions, working on commission means your ability to sell is a big factor. Budding real estate agents can expect to earn at least $30,000 a year.

Average salary Average weekly earnings in both commercial and residential real estate are more than $1807 a week. If you are a good seller, you can expect that to be considerably higher.

Demand right now The property sector is the second largest employing industry in Australia and the fourth largest in terms of new jobs, according to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. However, the NSW housing industry has not yet regained the peaks it experienced during the boom of 1998-2003.

Prospects The strength of the real estate job market is largely determined by the strength of the housing industry. Figures from the 2006 Australian Job Report suggest that employment growth in the industry will continue for the next five years.

Hot specialist areas The NSW and Victoria housing sectors may be somewhat flat but the Queensland and Western Australian markets are booming. People who know these markets and are willing to travel interstate are in high demand.
